My port scar itches like mad!

I'm 5 mths out and my port scar itches like crazzzzy sometimes! Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions? Also, is there anyway I can lighten them up some? There are some people I have seen that don't even have scars! With a previous surgery I didn't have any scarring except one spot (which is actually located under my port scar and above my navel scar) and its real soft and bright and almost my exact skin complexion. The ones with my lapband surgery are dark and still kind of puffy. I didn't put anything on my previous scars but this time around I'm putting cocoa butter on them but I don't notice anything different happening. Just the itching some times. Thanks!!

Hey there. I sometimes Keloid, and I was talking to my dermatologist about the itching scar. He injected steroids into the scar tissue and it stopped almost immediately.

I mentioned the itchy scar to my dermatologist. He injected steroids into the scar tissue. The scar has flattened a bit and stopped itching almost immediately.

Im only 2 1/2 weeks out. I had the itching with all of my scars. I use cortizone-10 and it works rite away! I know the itching has something to do with the healing of the nerves that where cut during surgery. Im tan colored to my scars are dark brown. They are also very puffy. Im not sure if my information is any good since your way further post opt than me. The cortizone works for me! Good luck Shana

Hi!  I'm 3.5 YEARS out and my port scar still itches sometimes! Itching is actually a pain reflex.  When you have an itch it's actually really minor, minor pain.  So as your incisions heal, it's not at all unusual to experience itching.  It just means that your body is repairing itself.   I just had a benign lipoma removed from my back a few weeks ago, and that scar itches like crazy right now, too. :)  The main issue with that, though, is that unlike my port scar I CAN'T REACH IT!   Happy Healing!  Jessie ETA: Cortizone cream will help with the itching.  I've also found that just putting regular lotion on it helps too.  As far as reducing the appearance, I'm not really sure.  I'm pasty pale, and my scars stand out!  But my port scar has faded a lot to a lighter pink.  I doubt that it'll ever go away completely, but the appearance will reduce with time.
No Day But Today!

hi diecia05 - my port site itches too. port was removed 4 months ago, give or take. itching means it is healing i am told, but for HOW LONG? tell the doc i guess.. SCAR GEL has worked well for me in the past. i had major surgery years ago and the scar gel applied regularly for a time, reduced the obviousness of the railroad tracks...

Some things that have helped me: For itching: Aloe vera gel Band-Aid Anti-itch gel For scar reduction: Mederma scar gel (I use the Walgreen's version) - not cheap, but a little goes a long way I used the Mederma gel on the extensive scars from my breast reduction (Feb. 2007), the 8" scar from my hysterectomy (April 2004), and my lap-band scars (Sept. 2007), and except for a 1" portion of a breast reduction scar (which is definitely softening and flattening over time with use of the gel), you can hardly see the incisions now. However, I have a keloid scar (raised & discolored) from a mole I had removed/biopsied years ago and nothing has helped that.  I suppose I could have a dermatologist treat it but it's on my back so I don't see it and am not bothered by it.
