Anyone ever lost it all then gained it all back with the band in?

I would like to know the answer to your question and the why.  But I think it would make me feel bad.  I learn so many good things from you guys that were banded before me and from those who are able to pass on tips from experience and attending group meetings.  It would be hard to post a purely self inflicted set back. I'm sure that there are, or based on the number of people being banded, that there will be.  However, I seriously doubt that those people will post on the board.  In order to do that, they would have to eat around their band and not get fills and not be on the board.  This is why "old timers" should remain on the board -- it'll help keep you on track.  It is unlikely that they would go back to the board to confess their "sins."  More likely, you would find them on the revision board or just living their lives unhappy and obese. Yeah...guess you're right. I would hope they WOULD come to the board for advise and maybe to find others in similar situations. Maybe the ones in this situation go to the revisions board.

Linsey, very interesting post, I did go to the  Revision board and read quite a few posts there, you might check in and read a few, it was not an exact answer to  this post but a few good insights to weight regain and their reasons. It was helpful for me to read those and maybe refocus on my eating habits and improve myself . Thanks again for this post and provoking thought!!

Yeah...I checked out the revisions. The ones I found seemed to have probs with complications, not just food choices. Also many of them never made it to goal. I read one where she started having probs only after pregnancy which I thought was very interesting since I plan to have another eventually.

Hi All, I have a friend who tipped the scales at 435....  he had the RNY - back when it was "new"  he did wonderful, lost 200 + lbs.. Even had plastic surgery to remove LBS of extra skin (that was donated to the burn center)  BUT he never went to therapy, or learned to eat the right foods, so sadly he gain most if not all the weight and is now looking into a revision.  He of course blamed all the weight gain on the fact that his Dr. is no longer practicing in our area. yadda yadda yadda  We all know the reason. Hopefully when he gets the revision he will do the right thing this time.  --- fingers crossed. I have a question, you are always saying eating around the band.  what exactly does that mean?  I have a very active social life, whi*****ludes bowling once a week and while I am bowling we have ****tails.  I drink vodka with diet 7up.  Is this going to be a MAJOR problem for me?  I really hope not.  I have another friend who did get the Lap Band and she does not seem to have any restrictions and has lost all the weight and continues to keep it off for 3 years now!  yeah for her. Thanks all, Eileen

I don't know that many people with a lap band so I can't tell you the answer to that question, but I have a friend who lost 150 pounds on a gastric bypass surgery and has gained back 80 of the 150 he lost. He was doing everything right and then once he got to his goal weight he just quit trying. I think if a person sets their mind to something they can do it whether it be losing or gaining weight.

True... But maybe it's easier to "open the flood gates" once you give up with other WLS? Like maybe the band won't ALLOW you to give up *as* easily???  I don't know I'm only speculating...

I'll jump in here and say that one difference with the band is that it's unlikely that you'll *get* to goal, or even close, without making significant changes in how you eat and move.  People who have other types of wls can lose a great deal of weight through malapsorption, but they may not learn to eat healthy foods and they may or may not exercise.  So, they can get to goal without re-learning new life-long healthy habits.   Tami

You're living proof of that! You work out queen you! And NO surgery will make you exercise...they say that's the *key* to LONG TERM weight loss. More important than any other single factor!
