Did anyone cheat on their pre-op liquid diet?

jamie, okay, this is what I understand about the pre-op diet.  my doctor was very firm about NOT eating things with carbs.  he said that the liver stores glycogen and that is what causes it to be enlarged and hard to manipulate during surgery.  the higher your BMI, the more difficult it is to move around in that tiny cavity with the lapscope.  I started my pre-op last tuesday -- it's high protein and veggies. I guess, what doesn't make sense to me is the fact that so many doctors do not require any pre-op diet and they have success procedures.   who knows, butI'd say if need or want to cheat, do it with something high protein and without carbs.   just my 2 pennies~

Hi Jamie I'm only on day four of my pre op diet.  My dr has us do two weeks liquids w/ one meal (no more than 400 calories).  The only cheating I do is having more protein than I'm supposed to.  I'm a a meat girl and 3oz  just doesn't seem like enough on some days :)  Happy to say I've already lost 12lbs!  You can do it!  You're so close.  I am realizing that I have not truly commited to a diet prior to this and I feel rewarded with each passing day!  Good luck on your journey:)

I did.. but it was Dr. approved.  I started my 2 week pre op over the holiday... and he told me "You can eat normally on x-mas eve and x-mas day.. just don't go overboard, but the next day, get right back on the diet".  So other than those 2 days.. I didn't. I still lost 8lbs on the pre op and have lost 30lbs over all now.

My doc would absolutely not do the surgery if I didn't stick to the full 10 day liquid diet he put me on. There was a girl the day before me who decided to have a grilled brat and cheated on hers and he sent her home - wouldn't do the surgery.  She had to start all over with another 10 days.

In the words of another "If you must cheat...do it with Meat" Ok, it wasn't a surgeon or anyone planning on lapband (to my knowlege) it was mr rocker himself, Meatloaf, but still it holds true. Must remember the importance of Protein and little to no carbs. You can doooooooo it (in my best cheech marin voice). I cheated, my Dr could tell because I didn't have a great pre-op weight loss (just 6lbs) BUT, he didn't penalize me either and I've been feeling great since! Good luck, we'll save you a spot on the looser loser's bench ;)

Sure did!! and if everyone who was actually on one  is really truthful I  am sure most of them cheated in one way or another IF we were all so great at these starvation liquid diets we woud have had no need for the surgery! there are always a handful who say they have never, ever, cheated and who knows maybe it's true!. I did ask my surgeon  about my liver after surgery and he said it looked fine .. I also cheated a little on my post op diet I was so hungry bythe fourth day.. I started having a handful of lowfat mozzerella cheese in the afternoons ..this got me thru till I was at the mushy stage. I simply did the best I could with these diets and that was that I have heard of surgeons asking if they cheated before surgery and most simply said  no for fear they might postpone .. Mine  never asked me .... I did lose 26 pounds though on the post op diet it all came off the first month after surgery  so I must have been doing something right ...I have lost 85 pounds but now at a standstill... hoping to lose 40 more this year ...but its like pulling teeth! good luck to you on your surgery I know you will do just great!!

It really cheeses me that there is no continuity about the pre op diet thing. I think that the medical community needs to get their act together and make an across the board EDUCATED decision on this thing! By educated I mean, giving real solid reasons why we need or need not do a strict liquid diet. I have to be on the  modified liquid hell for 2 weeks...yet someone else doesn't have to at all? or for 3 days? GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My surgery is set for July 21st so I start my liquid hell on monday. Tonight is Sat. and I had my "last supper"...whether they say to enjoy one or not LOL I had to have pizza cuz they say it will be a while before you can eat bread, let alone pizza bread. But I also walked 2 miles today and will do another mile before bed (cuz I usually do). So all in all...I'm thinking I'll be ok. I hope so anyway... Honestly, why can't they invent a liver shrinking pill???????????? Hugs to everyone! Retta the fat-tabulous!! LOL

I was put on a 3 day liquid pre lapband surgery - which I'm having Monday - I am just going crazy and thismakes no sense to me, 3 days don't seem like enough to shrink a liver, and secondly, how is juice going to shrink it if its loaded with sugar?  I was doing Atkins prior to making the decision to have WLS and honestly I would've rather stayed on that than this stupid liquid diet if it was about low carbing and proteing loading, at least I was having steak and veggies and something to chew on.  I never want to see broth again!!!!

i Hope, that the "liquid diet stage" after the lapband is somehow easier than without it.  Man I'm sooooo hungry and in such a bad mood its not even funny, especially with a 7 year old and a 1 year old I still have to feed and cook for.

I hear ya on the bad mood thing, its insane isn't it? Sugar free popsicles and water ice are a nice treat...now and again...but not every day! And broth? Yeah, I'm ready to throw mine out the window! Why do they have you on sugary juice tho? They should have specified sugar free in my opinion. Did they say not to have anything red today as well? They did for me so that if something happened, it wouldn't look like I was bleeding from the red juice or water ice. Its weird isn't it, how doctors do so many different things. Ugh...what else can you say? You'll be fine after surgery, everyone says its not so bad then. Good luck to ya, I'm headed in for gastric bypass on the 21st.

NO.........well kinda..........My dr was upset with me for gaining so much weight before surgery (I had over a month of  LAST MEAL) so he said if I did not lose 10lbs in before surgery he would not do it, so he made me drive 1.5hrs to his office the day before surgery and weight in, I had lost 14lbs......so  I left his office I stopped and got fried chicken, wanted 3 pieces but only got 2 well here is the funny part.... the next day after surgery in recovery dr came in and said "You did a great job on your liquid diet, your liver looked great" well me still being half under from surgery I said "Dorn, I could have had 3 pieces of fried chicken!!!"  Told on myself so be careful!
