Did anyone cheat on their pre-op liquid diet?

I am 3 days till surgery. I haven't cheated yet and hope I can beat the temptation to cheat. But as I was reading some posts, a few people didn't even have a pre-op liquid diet. From what I understand it's to shrink the liver so it's smaller for surgery. But would one meal in the middle of the liquid diet make it expand back? Just curious.

Hi!  I didn't need to be on a liquid diet, just a low carb High protien for 2 weeks.I did cheat 2 days before by going with my family to Olive Garden  I had still lost 5-6 pounds and my surgeon said my liver looked good so since you've already lost 7 lbs I can't imagine 1 cheat wouldn't hurt.  Also don't guilt youself over it if you did or do cheat. I enjoyed every minute of my Steak Gorgonzola Alfredo pasta!

Thanks for replying. I may have a meal tonight as a final "see ya a long time from now" meal, But I didn't think it would be to much of a problem because some people didn't have any pre-op diet they ate whatever up until night before the surgery.

I have been on the pre-op liquid diet since January 3, I have cheated a few times, but overall I am still losing weight. When I have cheated, it has nothing to the extent of my regular eating habits pre WLS decision.  Linds

How did the surgery go after a few cheats? Was your liver good?

Yep...I did. I had to do 10 day liquid diet and I only stuck to it maybe 75% of the time.  Still managed to lose 18 lbs in those 10 days and had a flawless surgery. Good luck to you!!!

I am having surgery on the 13th and I have cheated with like a tiny pice of chicken of some potatoe chips. But I have drinker my 3 shakes a day 64 ounces of water. Is that bad for my surgery.

I had two weeks of  liquid diet pre-op. It's horrible and awful.  The only thing that got me through was "cheating".  now let me clarify.  when i "cheated" it was with things that were extremely low in fat and super high in protein.  My main problem was i wanted something to chew!!  So used Tuna. straight from the envelope bags they have now.  No mayo no salt.  I chew the heck out it too!  (just to satisfiy) The reason they want your liver to shrink is because when we start to loose weight, its around our organs first.  The liver it self will actually "flatten" in a sense when it has not been given processed foods, too much salt and fat.  When they do the surgery it is your liver that will be "moved"  they need to be able to "get around" it. so they sort of fold it up on itself to get passed it to do the band placement.  if your liver is "full" it wont move or bend well.  If you have Fat surrounding your liver, it will be harder to access the point they need.  You want this to be esy on the surgeon while he is digging around inside of you.  You want there to be plenty of room for him to see exactly what where he needs to be.  If   you really can't take it anymore and I so get it, try the tuna, it really helped me and then I just thought about that liver and all they were going to do and I drank my drinks, sometimes in tears but i did it.  You can too.  It sucks that not all of us have to do it. it depends on the Doc and your starting weight.  You can do this, you have come too far to let this get you down.  we are here for you!! Stay Strong!!  You are almost there gurl!!

jamie, the pre-op diet sucks!  i did it for 19 days and lost 28 pounds.  i also cheated a bit and had some of the things that i know i'm going to miss.  i had a pancake.  some french fries.  a little bit of chocolate.  it slowed down my weight loss toward the end, but the surgery went great.  the cheating did not make my liver expand back.  enjoy the meal.  savor it.  and get ready for the ride of your life that starts on the 21st! yay jamie!

Thanks for all the responses!

I am hanging in there. I have been on all liquids since Monday evening, when they called to tell me I had a date and to go on liquids. So I didn't exactly have a final meal and/or drink with friends. I did the week before go eat at my favorite resturant cause I knew it was coming. I have been doing real well on just liquids and no real urge to cheat but today man I just want to eat something. And some friends are going out to celebrate 3 birthdays tonight and I know I can't have alcohol at all and are not planning on it. It's just all kinda getting to me at the same time.
