I'm on UHC through ING, and my case went before the ING appeals board today. From my research, it seems that if folks meet the criteria they're approved, but if they don't, they're denied. My plan requires a BMI of 40 and 5 years of documented comorbidities. I was at 38.8 and was denied multiple times. I hired Walter Lindstrom's office to help with the appeal and it's a good thing. We've had some hurdles to clear with this last appeal and it's been nice to have someone else handle it.
Good luck!

I requested the info on requirements for surgery and the sent me a paper version of this: http://www.anthem.com/ca/medicalpolicies/policies/mp_pw_a053 317.htm
I am confused by this part: "The individual must have actively participated in non-surgical methods of weight reduction; these efforts must be fully appraised by the physician requesting authorization for surgery"
I called and inquired about it and all they keep saying is "talk to your doctor", " We're not doctors so we can't tell you" , etc. Is it sayng I need to do a supervised diet or simply show satisfactorily that I have made a concerted effort to get my weight under control with or without doctor supervision??
I have been told that I have to be referred to see a specialist but my PCP's office won't refer me unless I meet the criteria for surgery so who is the one "appraising" my diet efforts? My PCP or the surgeon? I have an appt to see my PCP and discuss all this next week, but I am driving myself batty trying to figure it out. I am ok with it if I need to do a supervised diet but I just need to know.
Any info would be much appreciated!! oh and FYI this isn't through employment so I don't believe there are any "riders" on the policy that would add to there basic requirements.

My Thought on WLS: I can restrict what I eat, or I can do nothing and let what I eat restrict me!!

I've been on a constant diet for the last two decades. I've lost a total of 789 pounds. By all accounts, I should be hanging from a charm bracelet. ~Erma Bombeck

Has anybody here been able to get UnitedHealthCare to cover WLS working for SWA? I'm in the beginning stages of research and want to know what type of challenges I may face along the way.

I am trying to do some research from people that either work at companies I am interested in or know someone that works there. I agree I wouldn't mention it as a reason that I am looking for a new job.
Unfortunately, it may not bode well for your interview if you mention getting healthcare that covers this surgery as your reason for leaving. ;-)
The only thing I can think of is to look in your network to see if you know people who work at companies you are interested in. Linkedin.com may help with this. Then, ask them questions if you have that level of comfort. Because the coverage is company specific, you won't be able to go with just an insurer and plan. You'll need to figure it out to the policy level.
Good luck!

I live and work in Omaha, Ne. I work for a company that excluded weight loss surgery. I have been told by 2 doctors that I need surgery. So, now I am considering looking for a new job with a company that has insurance that it would be covered. Any suggestions on how to do this research??
