Is it possible to get an insurance company to cover the hospital portion of surgery and self-pay the surgeon's fee?

yes, some insurance companies will say the hospital is covered but not the surgery. This is what happened to me. They approved me and paid for everything only to turn on me and say that the surgery was NEVER covered so I had to pay for my own surgery but the most of everything else was covered. Donna
