Going through employer to change and exclusion

My policy has an exclusion and wont pay for WLS as stated in our plan. My husband owns the company that I have insurance with. Can he just call United Healthcare and tell them that he wants WLS included as a covered benefit in our policy? It's not in there now because he never knew I was looking into having this surgery. I know some have stated they've had success working with their HR departments to get it covered. Is this how they did it? Just ask them to have WLS added to their policy?
