Self-Funded Insurance Question

Has anyone had to deal with their employer's self-funded insurance plan? I have BCBC of IL, but they are only the administrators. Our plan is self-funded and pays all claims on its own. I was wondering if working with this type of plan is easier...I know the final appeal if necessary is supposed to go to our company's benefits committee. Thanks.

Mannik, I have sent you an e-mail. I am in the same situation. I have not been approved yet. You can read my profile to see my journey. Please respond to my e-mail. If the answer is yes, I would like to speak with you further. Thanks! Beth M

I have just the opposite problem from you. My husband's company is fully insured, and our insurance broker says United HealthCare makes all our decisions. She said if we were self-funded, the employer could decide if they wanted to cover weight loss surgery, but it is not even offered to us.

My husbands company is self-funded too. I know it will be useless to deal with UHC since they are the administrators. I have an appt for the 23rd of this month and plan to get as much information as possible. I plan to get a list of all my health issues and the cost that is associated with them and take it to the owner of the company. I plan to be positive and approach them in a positive manner, however I am also willing to fight. Not sure my husband wants me to go that route but I am determined to do it. Since my husbands company is rather small and he deals directly with the owner I feel like I am able to approach it this way. My husband is in management and travels a great deal. He is on call 24/7 and gone 3-4 days per week. Because of his/our loyalty to the company I quit my job. He has 25 years vested in the company and I have 19(we have been married that long). I have supported them and have put up with alot of stuff that other wives are not willing to put up with and they know that. Long hours and a lot of travel. If something were to happen to me there is noway he could continue on working the way that he does. He would have to be home every night and could not just leave at the drop of a hat like he does now to take care of their customers. I also know for a fact that alot of his customers would not deal with the company if he were not there. They have made that known. I feel like having them approve this would be a win/win or a win/lose (love to lose the weight)situation for both the company and myself. And in the long run it will be a huge savings all the way around. This will be my first approach and hopefully my only, but if that does not work I have other ideas in the back of my mind. Good luck with your endevors I hope it works out for you. Keep me posted. JC
