Hi Everyone.....My file just went into my insurance company today and my surgeon's nurse is afraid I don't have enough paperwork for them to approve surgery. They say they will cover surgery if medically necessary. I have a BMI of 42.9 and am over 100 lbs overweight. Has anyone had problems not have enough co-morbidities??

Hi Debra: BCBS and most insurance companies will authorize surgery with out comorbidities if you are 40 plus on the BMI. I am just under and at 39 BMI and have the comorbidities and doctor recommendation, but under 40 BMI requires you have been on a supervised weight loss program for 12 consecutive months. For those of us that are so overweight, who stays on a diet for 12 consecutive months when we are fighting a loosing battle? I am thinking about eating enough to get to the 40 BMI which is only about 5 pounds and then I won't need the documentation. It is a never ending battle! Good luck. Let me know how it goes. You can be approved as long as your bmi is 40 or above and if your bmi is above 40 you also fall under the americans with disabilities act.So you will probably be fine. I wish you the best of luck! Lorie
