So far I have 4 out of 5 years of records for my weight history. I can have any 5 dates where I was 100lbs overweight. I have 3 more years of records at my pediatrition, but the Chart Notes (what the ins co needs) are filed away. How hard is it to get Chart Notes that were filed away?? I have Regence Boeing BCBS, maybe they will let me slide with 4/5 years I have been 100lbs overweight for 10 years. Thanks

Hi Ryan. I'm dealing with BCBSTX right now. I sent an old doctor a letter today requesting my records from 10 years ago. He's retired and I felt funny making the request but I did it. What do I have to lose. In Texas doctors have a time limit on how long it takes them to get your records to you. If they have them, even if they're filed away, they should give you a copy. You may have to pay for the copy but it's worth it. They probably deal with requests for medical records all the time. Just make your request and document when and who you talked to. The insurance might let you slide with 4 years but I imagine you'd have to have a letter from your pediatrition. I would definitely ask for the records though! Good luck! Mary Austin, TX

yea, someone in the chat told me that its not hard to get old files... the ins. co. made it seem like it was a waste of time to do so.... but now I am not giving up!!! thanks!

DON'T give up. Luckily we have this web site. I've learned so much and especially about how the insurance companies try to make it so hard. Plus, they're human so sometimes mistakes are made. I would ask them where the policy for obesity surgery is posted. For instance, BCBSTX has their policy listed at http://medicalpolicy.hcsc.net/medpolicies/disclaimer . Just click agree at the bottom of the page and it'll take you to the policy on obesity. This page was very helpful when BCBS requested 2 years of medically supervised diet in the last 2 years. I told them that's not what it said in their policy and there was nothing they could do.

i have a question. i have bcbs of tx and they state in their list of requirements for surgery that i must have 12 months of continous supervised diet history or pharmacolgical(SP) supervision, 2 co morbiditys, psych eval and doctors note. was the 2 yrs they wanted in your plan requirement for surgery or did they just pop up and want that also? and how did you get around that? thanks much! kat
