Changing jobs

I have been battling bc/bs of Alabama since August. After two denials I am now on my 6month supervised plan with the pcp to give them what they wanted! I gained 5 lbs on my first month so looks like I am not doing too well. Meantime someone is offering my husband a position with a different company. It is Bc/bs but not sure which state or if they would cover it. How do you go about finding out? I don't want to start from scratch or lose all together! Thanks, Karen

Get your husband to ask about the plan, and tell them that you are about to have the surgery, and verify that they will cover it. Or ask to review their insurance coverage plan book. Mine states the coverage. "Coverage excluded except in cases of morbid obesity."

Be cautious...my husband changed jobs and there was a 90 day waiting period before he could even signup for insurance--then they tried to tag a 1 year pre-existing. However, before he accepted the job, I insisted that he get their group number so I could call BCBS. The pre-existing was lifted at the end of the 90 days due to the fact that we had BCBS with his previous job (actually any coverage prior to the new coverage is called "certificate of credible coverage"--sure save a long wait. He asked to view their benefit book-the first page we looked for was WLS--"COVERED", great, now with the raise, take it. However, with the new rules, there are still requirements to meet. 6 months supervised diet...unfortunately my PCP did not document properly about my diet, so I have to start over with the 6 month diet. Good luck and don't give up. ALSO, check with your local office of state vocational rehabilitation services. They sometimes have funding for medical procedures like this that would either prevent you from not becoming unable to work or to assist you in becoming able to return to the work force. They also require comorbilities; i.e., hypertension, diabetes, heart problems, arthritis, sleep apnea, etc. No one told me, I would have gone thru them 2 years ago. I'm still waiting on my BCBS but I have an appointment with my VRS to see if they can approve it. Remember, you are your best advocate and the only patient to fight for..the doctors office will not give your case the attention you will. Good Luck Allison in Alabama
