i called my ins co a couple months back and just asked if they covered wls and they said that they did...six months documented by pcp. so iwas doing that. then i called the other day and gave my member number and they said that the policy i have has wls or anything having to do with weight loss is excluded. is there anything i can do? paying it out of pocket is not an option. getting a loan is not an option. i am falling into depression b/c of this. i have optimum choice hmo by mamsi in the state of virginia. any info or help i can get will be appreciated. corinn

If I were you I would get a copy of the plan description (available through your employer) and read exactly what the exclusion says. If there's one thing I've learned from this site, it's to always get it in writing. Also, find out if the plan says weight loss surgery for obesity or weight loss surgery for morbid obesity as I'm sure your aware there's a difference. For example, here's my plans exclusion mumbo jumbo: "Services or supplies related to obesity or weight loss, including appetite suppressants, diet centers, dietary supplements and weight loss programs, except for covered treatment of morbid obesity if such treatment is determined to be medically necessary." Notice the wording? Hang in there girl. If there's a will there's definately a way..Dont give up!

My Dr.s office mentioned that Virginia laws are very strong regarding wls issues (they are in D.C. and see a lot of MD and VA residents). I would research the Virginia laws, then call them back
