Can someone please help me? I was told by a few people Aetna IS NOT covering any types of bariatric surgeries as of Jan 1st. Then I was told by some people that Aetna IS covering bariatric surgeries still in the new year. Does anyone have any info??

It is true that Aetna is dropping coverage for any/all WLS as of 1-1-05. The only exception to this would be if your employer specifically wants it included and pays the extra premium for the coverage. Also, I believe if your employer is self-insured, they can tell Aetna to cover the surgery....that is because payment would come directly out of their (your employer's) pocket...but, for this to happen, you have to be willing to go to the HR dept. and plead your case to them. Good luck to you! I really hope you are sucessful

I have spoken to Aetna and that is true, they are changing their policy in the new year. Although, check and see with your employer what your group renewal date is. See, I am going through an appeal as of right now to get approval with Aetna and I freaked out when I heard the new policy change. I spoke with someone at Aetna and they told me because my employer renews in the middle of the year, the policies would not change for me until the month of May. So if I get approved after my appeal, as long as I have the surgury before May..... they will pay for it. So there is hope!! Don't get too discouraged, just talk to your employer or Aetna and see what your situation is. Good luck! -Katie
