My rights to see my medical records?

My insurance company is requesting exact dates and documentation regarding everything -- documented weights, comorbidities, WL medications. I am 49 yrs. old and have been obese a long time. Therefore, I have LOTS of medical records relating to weight and comorbidities. For example, I have seen at least 3 nutritionists for weight loss, but how do I know when? The question is: What are my rights regarding reviewing my own medical files? Three weeks ago, I sent a request to find a single date (date arthritis was determined) in my file, and haven't heard a word yet. But my insurance says I need a lot more than that! They want x-rays, and lab results, doctors notes, etc. for each comorbidity AND documented weight AND previous attempts. The only way I can get all this info is to go through my files with a fine tooth comb. Do I have the right to do this?

You have a right to copies of your medical records. Call each Doctor and tell them you want to sign a release form to get your records. They'll either mail them to you or your surgeon. I sat down and wrote up every diet and diet pilled I tried. Some of the years I could not remember but I do remember they where in the 90's so I put down early 90's or late 90's. This is what mine looks like. 1972, Low fat diet, 14 months, 55lbs lost. Supervised Physician. 1974, Low fat diet, 8 months, 20lbs lost. Supervised Physician. 1978, Grape Fruit diet, 6 months, 15lbs lost. 1981, Yogurt diet, 24 months, 50lbs lost. 1989, Slim Fast diet, 6 months, 10lbs lost. Early 1990's, Dexatrim diet, 6/8 months, 10lbs lost. Early 1990's, herbalife diet, 6/8 months, 5lbs. Early 1990's, Grapefruit diet pills, 4 months, 0lbs lost. mid 1990's, Ephedra, 24 months, 30lbs lost. 1996, Phen Fen diet, 6 months, 45lbs lost, Supervised Physician. 1998, Slim Fast diet, 8 months, 10lbs lost. 2002, cutting back, watching fats, 6 months, 10lbs. 2002, Atkins diet, 9 months, 59lbs lost. 2003, Phentermine, 2, months, 5lbs lost. 2003, Apex, 1/2 months, 2lbs lost. 2003, Bontril, 1 month, 0lbs lost. 2003/2004 Merdia, 6 months, gained weight, Supervised Physician. Donna is correct. Get copies of all your records, (for the past 2-5 years) and then send in with your appeal. Fight the good fight! Roberta

i was having problems getting my records , then i heard about this law called the hippa law , if you request your medical record , the hospital has 30day to get that info to you . in the last 3 months i got 15 years of medical records. so they should not be denying you .
