I got the answer to my third and final appeal today - denied. They said that I have not been morbidly obese for two years & I lacked a "significant" co-morbidity. I guess PCOS, adenomyosis, uterine fibroids, sleep apnea, back pain, etc. doesn't count. They are changing their policies effective 11/29/04 & you will have to be morbidly obese for 5 years to have the WLS covered. I give up.

Thanks for the comments. Here is what I received from BCBS today via E-mail. "The following medical criteria apply to gastric bypass surgery: -- History and physical including any medical problems related to patient's obesity -- Patient's recent height and weight measured in a physician's office -- Condition of morbid obesity is of at least two years duration (must be documented in patient's medical record) -- Non-surgical methods of weight reduction must have been unsuccessfully attempted for at least two years prior to surgery (These weight loss attempts must be under a physician's supervision.) " I have to be morbidly obese for two years. I am just barely morbidly obese now....39 BMI. I just don't understand. I know people have been approved with a BMI of less than 40.
