I have finally decided on the lap band, but BCBS of AL says, "it's still considered experimental". I've learned from this site that BCBS of MN and TN have begun covering the lap band. What is the truth about the "stop coverage on Jan. 2005 for WLS? Where do I start and what do I do?? Robin

You should call your insurance company and ask them what's on covering WLS. Ask them if they are going to stop covering WLS by 2005. I'm finding out all insurance companies are different. My insurance company demands a year of dieting and some other insurance companies are fallowing that new guide line. BCBS of IL also is covering the lap band now. Donna

NEVER believe anything an insurance company tells you if it's not in writing. Start with your policy, or if you are self insured through your employer, read your Summary Plan Description booklet. Pay special attention to EXCLUSIONS and COVERED SERVICES. Email your employer, and ask if there will be any changes to the plan and when they will take place. (That way, you have it in writing.) This is the starting point. Move forward from there. Roberta

That's odd because I have BCBS AL and the information they sent me indicated otherwise. Of course all policies are written differently. I suggest you write them a letter requesting information regarding qualifications and exclusions of all bariatric surgeries. Get it in writing. When I would call and ask questions (or even email), I would get vague answers. Now that I have my policy information in writing from them and I know what I am dealing with, I can tailor my appeal much better. SWC
