Step back and take a deep breath... I cannot state this strongly enough, NEVER TAKE ANYTHING YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY SAYS ON THE PHONE AS THE TRUTH! That being said, you need to call your Human Resources department (if you are insured under an employee benefit plan. If you are insured under a private policy, call your broker. Request either a copy of the Plan/Policy, or a copy of the SUMMARY PLAN DESCRIPTION BOOKLET, and ANY AMENDMENTS that have been made since the printing of either one of those documents. It is crucial that you ask for the amendments, because a lot of Insurance companies stopped paying for WLS as of January 1, 2004. Once you get the documents, read them very carefully. Sometimes, treatment for obesity is listed as an exclusion, but then it goes on to say that unless there are co-mobidities, etc. If WLS truly is an exclusion, you still have options. You can change insurance carriers, or add an individual policy that would cover the surgery. A lot of states are paying for the surgery through their state's Vocational Rehabilitation department, so the person will be in good enough health to work. You could go out of the country, where the surgery is less costly, or self pay here. Fight the good fight! Roberta
