WELL I signed up with the insurance through my employer just to get this surgery, now I called my doctor and the nurse said united health care ppo on my plan excluded this procedure. So my company opted on the group plan to not add this on their policy which sucks. I spoke to my doctors office and she said that even if I came in to get him to see me and diagnose this as a medically necesery (ugh) procedure that I would have to pay all doctors costs and tests because this is related to obesity!!! So UHC sucks! Should I appeal? Should I go to the doctor and have him pay? Get a lawyer? Or just drop the insurance and say BARF!!!??? Misty

Misty - I certainly understand your frustration. If your employer chose to purchase an insurance policy that excludes the treatment, you can appeal until the next century -- its not covered. It would be a different story if your policy covered the surgery but denied you for some bogus reason. Unfortunately, more and more insurance companies are excluding coverage. Pay for the surgery or look for your own insurance policy that will cover it.

Never take what someone says over the phone as the gospel. Request a copy of your plan, and read it thoroughly under exclusions. If it is an exclusion, you are sunk. However, don't give up! Find another insurance company, change jobs and coverage, or do what ever it takes to save your life, Fight the good fight! Roberta
