Adding a secondary insurance?

I currently have a self-funded insurance that will only pay for the gastric bypass, the sleeve, or the lapband, none of which i want to have as a WLS (I choose the DS).  Since i'm going out of network due to no DS surgeons being in my state, my insurance co will only pay 60% of the bill.

This wouldn't have been an issue when my 1st choice was the lapband, since it was pretty reasonable. Obviously the DS is significantly more and I doubt if my insurance (self-funded) will be paying enough that my out-of-pocket wont  be pretty high.  Since my funds are very limited, I was wondering about getting a secondary insurance to see if they would pick up some of the tab when it's time for my WLS about 6 months down the road.

Is it possible to get a secondary insurance this late in the game or is it something i should have had awhile ago?  I don't want to waste my time (and money) only to have them not cover anything when it's time to have the WLS.

Any ideas or is this a silly idea?

It's not silly, it just might not be cost effective.

Going to the individual market for insurance may cost more than what they will pay ... if they will pay.

Research very carefully before buying any individual plan!  And good luck.  My employer based insurance has a crappy WLS benefit also.
