weight GAIN during supervised diet!!!

I have SHBP - UHC - HRA.
After I posted on here about having a BMI of 40 and being worried about losing below that and not getting approved....................................I have found that I am GAINING WEIGHT!   I am on month 4 of my supervised diet and am up 10 pounds from my weight when I had my visit with the surgeon's office back in February.  I should finish the supervised dieting requirements in mid July.  My intention was to not lose below 40 BMI during the 6 months so that there would be NO QUESTION about my eligibility for WLS coverage and not have to rely on co-morbidites that have strings attached to the insurande requirements if dropping below 40 BMI.  My weight has crept up on me while waiting for this 6 months to be over with and now I am worried that I won't get approved because of GAINING weight on the supervised diet.

Any SHBP UHC WLS vets have any experience with this situation?  Should I go on a crash diet and try to lose the 10 lbs by July.................which is only 2 months away?!?!?!?!?!?!

I am not at all scared of the surgery...............I am scared of the insurance company!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

I was exactly like you, I was not scared at all about the surgery.  I was scared of the insurance approval process.  I was so scared of getting denied and not being able to have surgery!

Anyways, I do  not have the same insurance as you, but I did want to tell you I gained 6 lbs during my physician supervised diet.  My daughter (who just had surgery on Monday) also gained a couple of pounds during her physician supervised diet and we were both approved.

Good luck to you!

They use the weight you were before starting the 6 month diet, not after.

Be careful, some ins co's require a specific weight loss before they will approve you. Make sure you don't need to meet such a requirement.

I live in NC but have BCBS of TX. I had a 3 month diet and gained 5lbs! I was really nervous but finished and my dr submitted the info and got my approval today!!!

Although my surgoen uses my first weight at his office and I HAVE to be that weight or less or he will post-pone the surgery.

So the next 2 weeks I have to kick it in gear!! LOL

Girl! I am in the same boat as you except I have a different insurance company!!! I too am on month 4 and I have gained 8 pounds but not meaning too. My BMI to start with was 38 with high blood pressure and diabetes. My last month is in July and I too am thinking should I go on a crash diet or what because I honestly have been keeping tracking of my food and walking and not meaning to gain and scared as hell to get denied because I GAINED during this 6 mo time.

My initial BMI was 40 with high blood pressurem and I have now been diagnosed with sleep apnea.

My dietician says she thinks the ins. co. just wants to see you comply with the 6 mo program - - - not necessarily lose weight.  I have been tracking my food and exercise as well.  Plus, I am more active since warm weather is here now..............so I was surprised when the weight gain added up to 12 lbs!

I asked the nurse at the surgeon's office if the gain will be a problem with the surgeon and she said NO.  She said the two week diet before the surgery will take those pounds off.

Still, I can't help but worry about this.

I am thnking of trying some protein shakes for meal replacements as I near the end of 5 months and start 6 months of the supervised dieting.

Hi There,

All the insurance company wants to see is that you can be committed to a program, since the changes you will have to make after WLS require dedication. If anything, gaining weight during the supervised diet will help your cause, since it will show weight loss without surgical intervention is difficult for you.

I wouldn't worry about this...I suggest directing your energy into learning as much as you can about life after your procedure.

GOOD LUCK!

Mine said all the same thing but I still worry too! Because my insurance gal said that they send over all the document to the insurance company after my six months is over with so I am just worried they insurance company will see that during that period I gained. That will be just devasting especially me too I am changing things-I stopped all pop and on low carb diet.
