I'm not sure where you live but here's the scoop on the Assistant Surgeon theory in Florida.  Basically, there are doctors here in the central Florida are who charge an "administration fee" above and beyond what your insurance covers (HMO or PPO).  In my research about this admin fee, it appears the fee is covering the Assistant Surgeon as insurance companies won't cover them.  I would call the primary surgeon's office and drill them about it.  Talk to your insurance company.  Advise them you were not informed of this charge.  Was your surgeon in network? If you have to, take it to your state's insurance commssioner! Good luck and keep me posted!

What exactly is the reason for the denial.  I know that for my surgery the assistant fee ($500) will not be covbered because my insurance does not cover a nurse as an assistant.

10K seems a bit high for an assistant surgeon regardless of the location.

My charge for the surgeon assistant, who is a PA, was $2000 but I was told about it at my first visit.
