Stopped before I started!
I took the very first step in applying for WLS by calling my insurance company(UHC). I found out that even though I have the highest level of coverage offered by my employer, Bariatrics is not included in my plan. I absolutely cannot afford surgery without some assistance(that I thought I'd get in the form of the insurance I pay $150 extra a month for)! Should I just take a time out and start saving money or are there any other means to get my insurance to cover it.
Of note...I am 30 and have been overweight since I was 3yrs old. My current BMI is 47, but I have no comorbidities...YET!!! I need help

No, there are no other means to get insurance to pay. It's not up to the ins co, it's up to your employer. If he wants to pay the additional premium for WLS benefits you would have coverage. So this one isn't on the ins co, it's your employer.
I'd be taking this time to save money and do a ton of research.

I have BCBS of AL but because my employer is a small business there are NO POLICIES available to our company that cover bariatric surgery. And, no, I'm not simply going by what the people at work told me. I was allowed to get involved with the process and try to get more information directly from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama. I was told point blank that there were no policies available to my employers small company that cover bariatric surgery. We can't pay more and get it added. It is excluded in all of the policies available to small businesses, pure and simple. It's not always the employers fault that bariatric surgery is not available to the employees.
Next, I tried to get individual insurance through BCBS of AL that I was willing to pay through the roof for... guess what? None of the policies that can be purchased by individuals cover bariatric surgeries.
I'm posting this on this thread because while I sincerely wish you all the very best and I do hope that you get the surgery that may very well save your life... I want it known that some health insurance companies try hard to avoid covering surgery .
Thanks for listening and good luck. I'm also self pay and certainly can't afford it. I also feel like I shouldn't have to when I pay over 300 per month for health insurance and all my doctors agree that I need it as I have serious co-morbidities.
It's sick what they are allowed to do to us.
