Hi everyone,
I am posting this for my cousin. He has been overweight for a while now and he was looking into getting gastric bypass. He lives in Bartlesville but can travel to a surgeon that is covered. He is just not sure of what insurances in Oklahoma cover gastric bypass. I was wondering if you guys could give me a hand and tell me what insurances cover your gastric bypass or even your DS. I am just trying to help him out and send him in the right directions. Also along with the insurance that covers the surgery could you give me a condensed list of what is needed to get the surgery covered (ie: 6 month diet, 5yr history).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Nathalie

Pretty much all ins co's cover WLS, it's the employer that is at issue. If the employer doesn't pay the additional premium for WLS then it is excluded. Does his current ins have WLS excluded?

His current job does not cover the surgery. He is looking into purchasing insurance since he is changing jobs and the new job does not offer insurance. (very small company) So it would be a private insurance he is looking into.

thanks

Private insurance policies never pays for WLS. Everyone who has WLS excluded would buy a policy just for the surgery and then drop the policy. No ins co could afford that.

Sorry.

Has he considered self pay?

he has but as of right now it is not an option. He was just looking to see if there was an insurance company he could find to cover the surgery.

Thanks for the response :)

Hi...I saw your diaglog and thought I migh be able to help. it is true that purchasing a private insurance is usually not a successful way to get WLS covered - they just won't do it at all. What is holding him back from being a self pay patient? Is it the cost?  If so, he may want to look into BLIS, there are both patient financing and complication protection programs available with Oklahoma prividers. He can financing his WLS and ensure that he pays a fixed price by using a BLIS Surgeon,, because they include a protection program for after surgery for some additional financial peace of mind. He should check it out. Best of luck! Let me know if you need anymore information!
