OK, here is my deal. I am out of work permantely per my doctors request, so I am only covered on my hubby's ins and they exclude the surgery all together. Here is my question. Is there a private ins co in VA, near Halifax that covers the  WLS (DS) ins and doesn't hold you acctable for pre-exsisting conditions and is not so expensive. This is the only reason I would obtain the private ins, is to have the WLS, and if there is such a ins co that does this , how long would you have to wait before you could actually use the ins. I have had 4 doctors tell me that it is life or death. I need this surgery and don't know how in the world I could ever self-pay. My credit is not the best in the world, and I don't have any rich family, so any suggestion you could throw my way would much appricated. Thanks in advance.

I suspect you're going to need to research self-pay options.  A lot of us are in similar shoes: my company has a weight loss exclusion in their policy, even tho the insurance company offers coverage.

You also need to research what procedure you feel would best suit your needs.

Good luck!

Finding a individual policy that will underwrite WLS coverage is slim to none.    I have not found a insurance company yet that will underwrite WLS coverage.   If your Dr. has put you off permanently, then maybe you should look into Social Security Disability, if you get approved and become eligible for Medicare they do coverage WLS but that route could be 2 years or more sometimes to get approved.

Wish I had a more positive outlook for you but no sure that you will find a company and if so they would probably put a pre existing clause in the policy and not to mention the outragous premiums you would probably be paying

Good Luck hope you can find a way to get this done

I agree - get on Medicaid, apply for it at the same time you apply for SSI.  Also, I recommend getting a lawyer to file the SSI, my husband just got approved, and it was only after we got a lawyer.  Yeah- it took a bit of his settlement, but at least he got approved.  Once you get ssi, you get medicaid, and you can find a surgeon that takes medicaid

Ins co's don't cover WLS for private plans because then everyone who is excluded would sign up for the ins, let them pay for surgery and then dump the policy.  No ins co could really afford that.

It looks like self pay is going to be the only route.  Isn't Medicaid going to take your husband's income into consideration?  I know they will use the fact that you do have ins and Medicaid would be secondary.  If your ins doesn't cover, Medicaid as a secondary isn't likely to cover either.

I'd also look at Mexico, it's a whole heck of a lot cheaper than the US for self pay.  There is only one surgeon in MX that I would suggest for DS and that is Dr. Ungson.  There are two others that do it but they are seriously inexperienced and you just can't go to a doctor for DS when they are working on their learning curve.
