self pay question

I've heard about alot of people that choose to pay for the surgery themselves.  I'm guessing that the surgeon's fees are upfront and then you're billed for the hospital fees?  Is this correct?  I've never heard of a "pre-pay" hospital stay...

For elective procedures, hospitals often want to be paid up front.  After all, if they didn't, many people would simply never pay.  Best to check with your hospital and find out what their policy is.

At Johns Hopkins Bayview, Baltimore, MD, self-pay is entirely up-front: hospital, surgeon, anesthesiologist. "Send three (3) checks, timed to arrive two full weeks before scheduled surgery date."

The hospital fee is estimated at $12,000.  ONE NIGHT!!!

The surgeon and anesthesiologist fees are much more reasonable - and not estimates.

The other posts above are correct - hospitals do require payment arrangements to be made up front prior to your surgery date.  Most require the full amount to be paid prior to surgery, but some will take 50% up front and take payments for the remaining balance.  I would call and verify with the hospital or ask the Patient Advocate at the practice you are working with.  They should be able to help you with that as well.
Good luck with everything!
