HI,  I have BCBS Federal Employee Program and I live in Oklahoma.  I had the VSG done.  I did self pay, but I'm asking for a re-imbursement from BCBS FEP.  As of last Friday, I found out it was denied.  The reason on my EOB was it was not medically necessary.  I called them and asked what was the reason that it was not medically necessary.  The lady put me on hold and checked and came back to say that she was not sure why they denied it.  However, she noticed that I did meet the requirments for the surgery.  She said she was going to resubmit the claim back to the Medical Review Board.  She would call me and let me know what she found out.  She said it might still be approved.  That would be great if it did get approved.

So, is your insurance a state BCBS or Federal BCBS?
What surgery are you interested in Lap Band, Sleeve, RNY, DS?

I have BCBS MN.  I called BCBS and asked them for their rules and guidelines and followed everything.  I also asked for a list of approved surgeons.  I was approved within 48 hours.  It was amazing.  I was told that BCBS MN is really good about approving WLS.  Just make sure you jump through their hoops.

I have BCBC MN and was just told that because I have not had a minimum BMI of 35 for two years, and even though I have sleep apnea and degenerative joint disease and now have a bmi of 43, I do not qualify.

I had BCBS of MN when I first started looking into WLS. They required a six month medically supervised weight loss program.

I loved reading this post.  I have been on my WLS journey for almost  year.  I started out with BC/BS of ND and was a few weeks away from having surgery when our company switched to BC/BS of MN.  At that time I learned I had to do a 6 month diet and find a new sugeon and hospital because mine did not have the blue distinction.

I am now in my 6th month of my supervised diet and am becoming nervous about being denied.

These posts made me feel much better.

Thanks

I started my wls in feb 09 I had to do the 6 mos supervised diet and all the testing now its october 3 and  my papers were finally submited for approval last week.   I am on pins and needles waiting for an answer.  I wish they would do this approval fist pending the testing and six mos diet because this waiting is the worst.....I will say they are very polite  helpful and respectful whenever I call..... good luck
