Stting here reading about the issues with insurance I was curious about the groups opinions and feelings on a question that my boyfriend asked when I first started this journey..

Is it possible to loose weight as if you had wls just by following the rules of engagement that goes with it?  Let me explain in case any one is confused.

If a person eats the same way, the same amount, exercises, takes the vitamines but does not have the surgery will the weight come off and stay off if you live like that for the rest of you life.?

It's probably possible but in most cases after a week you are off track and at least with the surgery you have that restriction there.

It depends on the type of surgery.  For RYN gastric bypass, the answer is NO because you lose weight for 2 reasons: 1) You can't eat as much (and thus aren't hungry)  and 2) the surgery causes malabsorption which causes weightloss.

I think it works in theory but not in practice. The "rest of your life" is a long time. How many diets have all of us started and been unable to continue for whatever reason? If you decide to try it ,keep us in the loop!

Really interesting question and it's one I contemplated when my band was removed.  I thought I'd be able to maintain my weight because I was used to eating small amounts of food and excercising as well.  But let me tell you -- when that band came I was ravenously hungry!  Never realized how much the band was keeping my hunger in chec****il it came out.  Also, it seemed like anything I ate put the pounds on, no matter how healthy it was.  There's no doubt in my mind my metabolism is now majorly screwed up, and that's why I'm seeking a revision.

At one point, I started a diet and ate 1,200-1,500 calories a day, and at the end of two weeks I'd lost 2 pounds, which is crazy!  I think one can lead the disciplined lifestyle of a WLS patient, but there are issues like hunger and metabolic disorders that must be factored into the equation.
