It depends on your employer. Some you can use insurance day one, other you have a waiting period sometimes 90 days.
The only thing I know about HMO is that you would need a refferal for everything. Like to see anyone outside of your primary care Dr.
For the PPO you will not need a refferal to go to specialists and such.

My job has day one insurance and day two I called to see if weight loss surgery was covered, day three I went to a seminar....and now I am on the track of waiting for cardiac clearance so they can submit my info. I called my insurer (CIGNA OAP) and they told me there was not waiting period I am covered for all benefits provided as of my hire date. You can call your HR to be sure.

Get copies of both policies so you can compare and make SURE WLS is not an eclusion on either (or both!) plan. POS versus HMO is pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things if one or the other has an exclusion.
