UHC Employee plans do not cover WLS-- EVER!

So taking the advice of others on here and researching A LOT, and talking to some others who have had WLS I had decided that a RNY was the way for me to go......I talked to my family last night, got my self prepared to start this....and then today I called the Insurance company and BOOM a big ole fat NO!  UHC does not cover WLS surgery of any kind, ever no matter what for Employee plans!  WTH!  A healthcare company does not cover a life saving, $$ saving Surgery??  Oh but they will cover it under their medicaid, medicare, and non employee plans!  So I guess those of us who work here are SCREWED!  So now I am lost....Hoping that I can do this without WLS.....

UHC does cover WLS.  Your EMPLOYER chose not to pay for the add-on.

I have UHC and it is covered for me. I think you spoke to a bad rep. Call again and ask if your policy excludes it. Because I assure you it IS covered if your plan is not excluding it.

I have the approval letter to prove it :)

You are corrected.  As a UHC employee, WLS is a benefit exclusion.  I worked there myself and had to get my bypass covered through a part time job that I had.  I am sorry.  I can totally relate to your anger as I myself had the same feelings when I worked there.  I feel for you.  If you need to vent, we are here for you

I am well aware that UHC does cover WLS, heck even the companies under UHC that have medicaid and medicare plans through Americhoice cover WLS....BUT as an employee of UHC the plans that they have EXCLUDE all WLS !!!  Its just assinine!

I think I am in the same boat. I am not an employee of UHC, but my Employer is Stryker and they have UHC and have excluded it. They used to cover it and now they don't. Has anyone had any luck getting something like that reversed? I mean is it possible to get the company to make an exception or??? Also, I looked in to pulling money out of my 401K but Stryker has certain rules that prevent me from getting a loan or withdrawing the full amount that I need.

As of 11/7/2015 I have gained all my weight plus some. I weigh 313lbs. I blame it on steroid injections I received for my back, the cymbalta i am on for fibromyalgia, I was on Lyrica for 3 months and gained 30lbs, and I found out I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis as well as Pcos. I had back surgery and had to lay flat for three months which didn't help either only to find out a year later the surgery was a failure. I now have a spinal cord injury and I am in a wheelchair! So much has happened since I last visited this site. The only thing I can do is swim. I am going to try and do this at least 2 times a week and work up to more!
