Insurance Crisis

So I've long since decided I want WLS, the problem is my work doesn't provide benefits. I've also tried on multiple occasions to get insurance but I can't due to my weight (I'm 27, 380lbs and 5'11" which brings my BMI to a 53.). Did anyone else run into this issue and if so how did you deal? Were you able to find a provider to cover you?

Help!

I don' t know of any private insurance plans that cover WLS.  Your best bet is to change jobs to one that provides benefits that include WLS.

Can you get an additional part-time job that offers benefits? I know companies like Starbucks and Home Depot (and many others) offer part-timers benefits, and I know for a fact Starbucks' insurance covers WLS.

I actually got married in December so I could get on his insurance since my company was changing insurance policies to one that did NOT cover WLS. We were already engaged, though  :)

Basically, you have two options:

1) Lobby your employer to include weight loss surgery as a benefit (contact your Human Resources Manager)

2) Get a part-time job and buy into the group plan. Group plans are guarantee-issue (so you won't run into all the problems you will if you try to get individual insurance)...... just research first and make sure whatever plan it is covers bariatric benefits.

Good luck :)
