Geeze... can she get a break?? 6 month supervised diet woes!!
For all those who had to do a 6 months pre-op supervised diet.... here's what just happen to my antie this week. This coming Monday would have been her 1st appointment after completing her 6 month pre-op diet. She lost 32lbs which was GREAT!! Well... this past Wednesday... she went to work and 10 minutes after arriving in the office - she was LAID off. OMG.... she called me crying like crazy. What a crappy thing to happen. So needless to say - she won't be having her surgery any time soon.
Just wanted to share with everyone who has to go through a supevised diet. Yeah 6 months sucks but just think... there are far worse things that could happen considering.
Be well and keep your head up during your pre op diet...

Well she should have another 30days of insurance left and then she will have the option of Cobra ins. Tell her not to lose hope just yet. Tell her to let the Dr know her situation and maybe he'll hurry things a bit. Hope all goes well with your Aunt.

COBRA coverage is expensive, but I would do all I could to keep it so I could have the surgery. Being laid off sucks.

Thanks everyone! So guess what else...typically your insurance is cancled at the end of the month following your exit - right? Right... since she was laid off on 2/25 and there's only 28 days in Feb - she only had 3 days of "true coverage". I have heard cobra will not cover bariatric surgery. Any who - she plans to check into on Monday.
Thanks for your feed back - yep it does suck! My little brother who is a Senior at USC was just laid off from his part time job on Friday as a file clerk for a Hospital. He still lives at home with my mom however has just bought a car that's he's been finanicing with his part time job. He's a smart young man... he'll be fine - I'm sure.
All the best with your conitnued success...

COBRA is usually an extension of the same coverage you had before losing your insurance. Have her at least ask. :)

COBRA covers whatever was covered by her insurance--COBRA is just an extension of the same plan she already had through the employer. If it covered WLS, then it will still cover WLS via COBRA.
If she is fortunate to find another job with insurance that covers WLS, she can still use this 6-month diet documentation if the new insurance requires it as well, so she won't have to do it over again (assuming the visit notes are detailed enough).
