Many many folks are in the same situation. My plan through my employer has a WLS exclusion.
I opted to go to Mexico and have my vertical sleeve procedure done there. What would have cost me at least 20K in the US cost me less than 9K in Mexico. In addittion my surgeon had done way more sleeve procedures than most of the surgeons in the US. I got much better care down there than I ever would have in the US. My surgeon saw me at least 3 times everyday while I was there.
There are also several options for self pay folks, none of them easy, none of them without cost but they are still out there. I took out an equity line of credit on my home which may or may not be an option for you. Some folks use some of the programs that advertise on OH.
I had my surgery in June 08. I started with a BMI over 51 and at 5 ft tall I weighed 251 the day of surgery (263 before my 2 week liquid diet). I am down about 100 lbs and off most of my meds.
I opted for the sleeve because I did not want any procedure that had any malabsorbtion.

Whatever you do is it truthful, necessary and kind?

If you're thinking of getting your own insurance not through an employer, that's likely not going to work.

Can you swing an extra part time job for 6 months or so? Places like Starbucks and, I believe, Home Depot offer insurance to part-timers, and it covers WLS. That's what I was ready to do when my company switched to a policy with a complete WLS exclusion. Instead, I mmarried my fiance and got on his insurance! Do you have a spouse with a different policy you could look into?
