I wanted to know if anyone could offer any suggestons. I have been trying to have wls for 8years. I am disabled and have been all my life (I have had medicaid all mt life also) and I keep hitting a wall. I'm 30yrs old and my bmi is 85. I have tried the texas rehibalition commission and they told me it was not medically necessary. I have had 2 jobs but the insurer told me I was too big. I'm at the point where I am gonna be bed bound. I need assistance in EVERYTHING I'm so depressed I've tried to hard I'm ready to  give up. Any suggestions would be great thanks.

Don't give up. I had a friend who appealed consistantly for 3 years to Medicaid for approval for RNY. Keep trying and praying about it. Have you tried other methods, keep notes and let your doctor oversee the diets you are trying, so you will have good medical records to submit. I dont know what all you have done, but keep trying.

Good Luck,

With your BMI being so high have you looked into getting the DS. The DS has the best EWL (estimated weight loss) and maintenance of all WLS  (weight loss surgery).  If you get the band or RNY it would be harder for you to get to a "normal" weight.  Anyone telling you that it is not medically necessary for you is full of crap. According to the NIH (national institute of health) you qualify for WLS if your BMI is > or = 40 with no cormorbid or BMI > or = 35 with comorbids. You more than qualify.

Do you have Medicaid or Medicare? Medicare covers the DS without doctor's referral.

If you have Medicaid then they may have different requirements since Medicaid is partially state funded . Have you called them up to ask for their specfic policy on WLS?

Please come over to the DS board and ask if anyone has had Medicaid in TX get the DS approved. I"m sure there are some (or at least a couple) who might be able to help you get approval for WLS. Do not give up. You deserve a healthy, happy life.

Whatever you do don't give up. Remember..for you it's your health at risk for insurance company it's a BUSINESS. If they can say no and be confident that you will just disappear then they will. Apeal the decision, make them research and gain true knowledge regarding WLS.

Good luck and my prayers with you.

An addition to all the other posts - there are several state medicaid programs that approve the Gastric Bypass (Nevada & california are 2 I know for sure) and sometimes other types of WLS. You should reasearch your state medicaid's requirements as well as other states. And continue to appeal based on other state programs approval.
