So I called the Dr's office yesterday to start the process and I've been doing all my research and I want the Sleeve, the lady (nurse, whatever she is) was so rude and said "NO insurance is covering the sleeve"! I know that is not true but how do I argue with an elder and then how do I back up the fact that I know of people (from this forum) that some insurance companies cover the sleeve! I want them to atleast TRY to send in the paper work, if I get denied I get denied but I would feel better if they would atleast try to submit the paperwork. I know my insurance covers WLS, my employer is self - insured so the paperwork isn't really looked at they just approve the surgeries once they see it is a policy holder from my company! So any advice...should I get the doctors to try, should I call my insurance company beforehand and ask...does it matter if I have "a code".

Most insurance companies do not cover VSG  because it hasn't been done as a stand alone procedure that long. Medicare does not cover it because they say there are not enough long term studies to prove it's effectiveness. Most insurance companies do cover the DS. The first part of the DS is the VSG. Have you researched the DS?

That being said, there are some insurance companies that do cover it. I know my insurance, Health Net, does cover it (well at least according to their lastest policy, I don't know if they've actually covered it). Maybe you could post this question on the VSG forum and someone there could offer you studies that may help with your appeal. You could ask who has had insurance cover their VSG and provide that also. The more people who get insurance to cover the VSG the easier it will be for those coming after them.

You said that your insurance is self funded. I would call up your HR dept and see what advice they can offer you. Maybe you have to exhaust all your appeals through your insurance then  your employer could step in? If your surgeon's office is unwilling to help you get the WLS of your choice, switch surgeons. The choice of surgery is completely up to you, you have to live with it not them. BTW you need to get over the idea of not disrespecting your elders, just because they are older than you doesn't mean they are right. Just like the idea that because they are medical doctors or in the medical profession they know what is best for you. They don't, you need to advocate for yourself.  Best of luck to you
