Ugh, insurance sucks. My insurance through my job is changing Jan. 1, and the new policy does not cover any WLS for any reason. Imagine my frustration after already doing my psych eval, my 6 months of supervised dieting, my consultation with my surgeon, etc.

In the end, I married my boyfriend so I could get on his insurance   We weren't planning on getting married till 2010, but his insurance covers WLS, so we went to the courthouse and did the deed! We will still have a wedding in 2010, though--we haven't told many people about our predicament.

Not that I am suggesting you get married if you're not ready - I don't know the status of your current relationship.

Oh, a more reasonable suggestion: try getting a part-time job at Starbucks. They let part-time employees get insurance, and their plan covers WLS. Just make sure it's a free-standing Starbucks, not one inside a Target or grocery store or something.

Yikes! Very frustrating! There are alot of people in your same situation. Employers have the opportunity to change their benefits and plan for the first of the year and many are taking that opportunity this year. This is because WLS is an addition to the regular health plan and costs the employer more in premium each month. When times are tough in the economy, employers are looking for ways to cut costs and unfortunately, this is an easy one to cut on the front end. What most employers do not now is that obesity is costing them much more that just their insurance coverage. It accounts for their health premiums to go up anyways because the health plan is paying for the care of co-morbid conditions associated with obesity.

I work for a company that is helping patients and their employers pay for WLS in a way that has never been done in the past. You can learn more about how BLIS and how we can help you and your employer by clicking on the article to the right of this forum titled 'Other Avenues When Paying Cash'. Also, please feel free to email directly with questions or concerns!

I wish you both the best of luck in your journey towards weight loss surgery!
