Appeal Denied for VSG by Anthem BCBS

I received a denial on my appeal to BCBS for VSG as not medically necessary as it is considered experimental or investigative.  I'm so disappointed!  I really feel this is the best WLS option for me but self-pay is out of the question.  This denial was after my surgeon sent 173 pages of supporting documentation for VSG along with my appeal letter - which the surgeon's office said was one of the best they'd read.  Any ideas?

You wont consider Gastric bypass instead? There are barley any insurance companies that will cover vsg...

I am so so sorry! I have BCBS of NC and have just submitted for VSG for the first time but am expecting a denial letter. Can you appeal again? I have talked to some people with BCBS and they have said they have had their appeals overturned by submitting proof that other BCBS in other states cover it. I know BCBS federal and BCBS of MD and DC cover it. I can find their policies if you want. You can cross post this on the VSG forum and I am sure you will get lots of replies and maybe some helpful advice. MercyQ beat the insurance company when they denied her VSG. If you have any success or find loopholes, please share. I know I will be down this road soon enough.

Thank you for your information.  I will keep it up then....I was so discouraged that I figured that was the end of it.  I have very similar co-morbidites to yours, 42 BMI, high triglycerides, plantar fascitis, osteoarthritis - overall Metabolic Syndrome X, marginal high blood pressure, blood sugar borderline.  I really thought the information that my surgeon sent was pursuasive.  I even thought my letter was - do you think I can get through to them with a phone call?  Thanks so much for your feedback!
