I just received a call from UHC registered nurse letting me know that I was APPROVED!!

The doctor's office faxed the paperwork to them yesterday and in 24 hours I received the approval.

I followed their requirements by the book (both insurance and surgeon's) - it worked!!

CONGRATULATIONS!  I have United Healthcare too.  I was denied but am waiting for an answer to my appeal.  I thought I followed all requirements, but they "forgot" to tell me about the 5 year documentation that was necessary.  I had all my surgeon's requirements perfect!  Well I got the 5 year history that I have had a BMI over 40 and am hopeful that all will be good now.  Just playing the waiting game now.
Hope you get a surgery date soon!  Good luck!

Hi im going through the same thing with UHC. What exactly do they mean by 5 year History. Did your BMI have to be over 40 for those five years/

What kind of surgery are you getting? I have UHC and they have denied me twice and the first chance I get i'm kickin em to the curb. I put in for the sleeve because I don't want bypass. So now I have to settle for the band which they will approve. Still they stink and i will dump them after all my doc visits. i have been with them 24 years but not after this year. I will milk them for all it's worth first.

I don't think any insurance covers the sleeve yet. There are not enough medical studies or long term data on the VSG as a stand alone procedure. I know that UHC will approve the DS (the VSG is the first part of the DS)have you thought of looking into that? With the DS you get restriction because of the sleeve and malabsorption because of the switch, which helps you maintain your weight loss.  You shouldn't settle for a surgery just because that's all your insurance is willing to pay for. If your mind is set on the VSG, if you could afford it, you could self pay. From what I've seen the self pay rates on the VSG aren't that bad. At least with that you won't have to get fills and unfills. From what I've seen on the DS board UHC is pretty good with approving the DS. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide.

Hello, don't feel bad I have United Healthcare as well and I have been denied as well and I have my second appeal in now. This time I have follow all of their requirements and am hoping to have surgery around Thanksgiving. I'll keep all of you in my prayers as I do for myself.
