Has anyone had Blue Cross cover their VSG (Verticle Sleeve Gastrectomy

I have Blue Cross through Premera (Microsoft) and my surgeon said he has never heard of them approving a VSG. Anyone been successful?

46 yr old female; 5'6"; 11/13/08 VSG Dr. Jossart LapSF, SF, CA
SW 213, GW 150, CW 140, dream GW 130 and/or 20% body fat or less

Have you tried asking this question on the VSG board? They might be more helpful. I have not personally heard of many (if any) insurance companies covering VSG since there aren't really any long-term studies/results yet for the VSG as a stand alone procedure.

I know some BCBS is covering the sleeve. Federal and Carefirst BCBS is. Hopefully the other BCBS will follow suit. Check your policy, do they cover DS at all? If they do, you might can get DS approved in a two step procedure and your surgeon will only do VSG.

That's great news. Thanks so much for letting me know. I am self-pay w/surgery on Nov 12 but we are going through the insurance process as well to see if they ultimately approve. My BMI is unfortunetly in terms on insurance is just 35. I have high triglycerides and am borderline diabetic and sleep apnea so maybe I have a chance. So how have you been doing has your recovery been good?
