i am a type 2 diabetic wanting to get gastric bipass surgery, according to cigna pos guidelines it says i have to be either a bmi of 40 for 24 months or 35 bmi with one co morb which i have diabetes, last year the last month of my 6 month weight loss i was a  bmi of 33.8 , ugghhhhhhh, i can not find in cigna guidelines if they take your bmi from the time you submit for surgery or from prior to supervised weight loss, does anyone know?

I was told by the WLS center that the BMI recorded at the first bariatric nurse visit is the BMI they use to submit to insurance.  My BMI is 40 and I have the same concerns.  They told me not to worry, that if I lose and go below 40 during my 6 month diet it didn't matter.

I would ask your WLS center - they deal with this all the time and would know for sure.

my first bariatric visit was aug 2008 and the low bmi is 2 months in 2007 , so the low bmi would fall in the 24 month time period
