Don't understand letter from insurance company

Okay, so last week I get a letter from the insurance company approving my RNY and it has since been scheduled for 9/25/08.  Today I get another letter from the insurance company saying the surgery is outpatient and I can stay one night and I get to go home on 9/26/08.  What the heck?

However, it goes on to state that if additional time is needed, it must be pre-certified by the provider.  Does this mean that my doctor's office has to get the okay now?  Or does it mean that when I'm in the hospital, the hospital will call and ask for an extra night?

I didn't think this was an outpatient, go home the next day surgery.  I'm sort of mad that the insurance company is saying that.  I'm surprised they just don't want me to go straight home as soon as I get out of recovery.  Grrrr.  I'm just really irritated right now.

I suppose the best thing to do is call and talk to someone at my doctor's office tomorrow.

This is something that the doctor's office will take care of. Try not to worry. IT says the same thing on my approval letter, so most likely it is standard wording. :)

It is standard wording, same was on mine and the nurse explained that it was standard and the hospital will call your insurance for precertification for additional time.

Okay... thanks for your responses!  That helps me a lot.  I'm just going to fax the letter to the doctor's office today.  I thought that *maybe* it was a standard thing.  It's good to hear that it is.  :o)

Yes, as it turns out you were all correct.  My doctor's office said it's just wording and it's standard stuff.  The hospital will indeed authorize another day after i get there.  ;o)

Not sure if I'm reading your post right, but I went in hospital the afternoon of 2-18-08 and was discharged afternoon of 2-19-08. Was actually in the hospital about 24 hours.
