Hey everyone!  I am deciding to post this because there are probably more people in my shoes.  SO I have been trying to get insurance for me and my family along with husband because we are self employed and own a business.  Well I decided that I would bite the bullet and do group insurance because they can't deny anyone. (  I have been denied by individual policys because of my BMI)  Well when I Called today to follow up the woman told me that the rates were outrageous....SO Plan B I fould the Texas Coalitions There are coalitions in every state......But you have to own a business.  The new women told me that I will get stand alone rates as well as Coalition rates but that I would have to wait for a coalition to open up which can take 90 days or longer....Oh the waiting game again......AND they probably won't cover weightloss surgery anyway...so that would mean in the eyes of the insurance world I will have to pay for complications.  Oh and they can also put a 12 month waiting period on my ass because of pre existing conditions. I would be willing to pay cash for my procedure but everyone here has scared me with complications because they are the fact of life with surgery.  MY husband is very supportive he says do the surgery and roll the dice.  Have any of you done this had surgery with no insurance and rolled the dice or had some insurance put prayed it would get paid by the insurance company.  I would love to hear from any of you and your experiences.......

Maybe you should look into the vertical sleeve. It is the safest surgery out there. Go to the VSG board and ask questions.  What surgery are you looking into?  One good thing about the sleeve is it is the first part of the DS or you can also get the RNY if the sleeve does not work.  There isn't any rerouting of anything so less complications.  Skye

I think if you have the money then, hey! I would take the chance. It almost imposible to get a private insurance to aprove weightloss surgery.  I would just follow my instinct, if your mind is telling you not to do it w/o insurance then don't do it. Only You know You.

Hello - It has been my experience that when you are trying to acquire insurance and you fall into a certain BMI range, it can be very challenging. Many people struggle with the same roadblocks you mentioned in your message. If you decide not to deal with the pre-existing condition period wait time that many plans will make you undergo -I'd like to introduce you to another option as a self-pay patient. There are many surgeons (and growing) in this country that provide a complication protection plan for weight loss surgery patients like yourself. These surgeons are titled BLIS certified surgeons. And as a self-pay patient, when your surgery is performed by a BLIS surgeon, any out of pocket costs associated with complications will be financially covered for you within certain parameters and guidelines. To learn more and to find or request a BLIS surgeon in your area, you can visit www.bliscompany.com
Good luck in your weight loss journey! Billie
