What do you think my chances of approval are?

I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois.

I started this process about a year ago, I completed my nutritional visits (about 5 of them), psychological testing and a sleep study.  I plan on sending in a sheet of exercise that I’ve done such as walking, swimming and cardio signed off by my pcp. I have 5+ years of documented weight history. I have type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure(

Which I’m on medication for ) with a BMI of 44. I’ve visited my doctor’s office about 7or 5 times within the last 6 months but not consecutively, and had them record my weight. I’ve visited my surgeon’s office within the last 6 months in a row and had my weight taken.  Some how they have put together 6 consecutive months of documented weights with my surgeon visits and my pcp visits.. I’ve lost 15lbs-20lbs, and now have a BMI of 41. My question is do my chances look good for an approval from those who have went through the process? I meet with my PCP again this month and I'm going to ask her about starting a "weight loss program" aka Supervised program this month which might finish around December  Since I saw her last month anyways, just incase this isn't enough for my insurance.  Thanks, Kim

Hi Kim,

I have not had weight loss surgery but I have worked at ObesityHelp for quite a few years and it sure seems like you are on the right path!  I can tell  that you have done your homework and that you are being diligent about documenting your medical visits and history. Great job!  Good luck to you! Keep us posted....

All my best,

Tammy Colter

I work with BCBS Il a lot in my office. Their criteria is pretty specific (you can view it online). As long as you have 6 months of supervised dieting, you are all set. Six months of weights is not enough, the records need to talk about diet and exercise, so make sure they do. Many of our patients do not understand that a sick visit to your family doc where they happen to weight you does not constitute a medically supervised diet. I would submit what you have and continue your supervised diet while you are waiting for an answer.
