under medical exclusions it reads Treatment for obesity or services performed primarily for weight loss or control (including gastric bypass and gastric staplings) but this shall not exclude procedures that are necessary due to a specific condition caused by another illness or for morbid obesity as determined by the plan. Any thouhts the insurance lady on the phone was a total snatch and just kept saying your plan doesnt cover it  but this statement above is what it says in my benefit book.....sharon

I would get the referral and have the surgeon check into it. Sounds like it would be covered under standard NIH guidelines, but only the insurance and your doctor's office will know exactly what the contract specifies to prove medical necessity.
