Need Insurance Help
Hello All,
My insurance company (who is also my employer), has excluded bariatric
surgery, so I'm looking for other options.
Currently I have saved up enough money to pay for Bariatric Surgery out of pocket, however I'm afraid to go that route since my insurance company has stated that they will not cover complications from the surgery.
My husband is self employed, so I could potentially buy secondary insurance through his business, but how can you find out if an insurance plan covers bariatric surgery? I've called a few insurance companies, but they have not been very eager to talk with me about this. Actually, they've been pretty tight lipped and rude.
Does anyone know of any insurance companies in Michigan that covers this surgery?
Would I have to get rid of my Primary insurance, if I get the secondary insurance to cover this?
How much would the potential complications be for? Can I bank roll this, or is it potentially millions of dollars?
Is there anyone that I could hire to help me look at insurance options, and help me navigate through this mess?
Thanks for the help!
-Sandra
The trend in the industry is to not offer any obesity coverage (even purchased as a rider/extra coverage) to employers with less than 100 employees, if at all...
Duodenal Switch hybrid due to complications.

My experience as a morbidly obese person trying to buy private insurance is that no one will cover you for much of anything at all. I was denied and my husband, who is "only" obese, was denied when we tried to get standard health insurance when I lost my job.
I do know someone who was able to get insurance being morbidly obese but it was very limited coverage with a very small lifetime cap on expenses and it didn't cover WLS. That was considered a pre-existing condition, for one thing.
