Hello to all, Well I was denied surgery last week by  UHC choice plus.    Reason being that my bmi is under 40 !!   I am about  37. I was approved by the same Insurance carrier in 2005,   at that time my bmi was close to 50. I did not have the surgery done at that time !!!   I do regret it now. I  did loose 130 pounds  and  got my weight down to 165 pounds  5'4. I am now back up to  210-215 and struggling and need the lapband (as a tool)  to help me finally control and maintain a lifte time against  morbidly obesity. I attached a copy of my approval letter from 2005 with my appeal letter detailing the lifetime struggles with obesity and my family history as well !!! Do I have a chance at approval ? Thanks Phyll   !!!!

I wish you the very best.....  Do you have co morbids that you are being medicated for and the meds are not controlling it?

Some UHC policies require BMI t o be 40 or above and do not cover for BMI below 40, regardless of co-morbidities. Our office has learned that the hard way unfortunately.  One thing you can do is find your highest weight for each of the last 5 years, you might have been at a BMI of 40 during each of the years. Good luck! Bonnie

Thankyou  Bonnie,   I did rec'd the official  denial letter.   My plan will cover BMI's  35-39 with one co-morb.    That was good news.  I also faxed  the approval letter from 2005 with is evident that my bmi was over 40  !! My surgeon office is also helping me the the appeal process !!! Hopefully I will get approved !!!
