Worried about my lack of documentation

My insurance requires proof that I've been obese for 4 of the past 5 years (I've been obese since I was teen), however for a time I was unemployed and unable to visit a doctor. As a result I don't actually have medical documentation of my weight for at least a couple of those years. Does anyone have any suggestions for other types of proof that might be acceptable?

I don't know if your insurance would accept this or not.  However, did you belong to Weigh****chers, Nutrisystem, a Gym, or something similar?  I've heard from other posters that if you can get continuous records from organizations such as these, some insurance companies will accept these.   Hope this helps! Best of luck, Melissa

First of all, thank you for the suggestions-- I feel a lot better now. Plus I found out my first appointment with the surgeon won't be until July, so I have time to work on getting my proof together. Sat down and brainstormed with my mother last night and we came up with 3 health professionals that have known/seen me for the past few years, including a nurse that has known me since I was 8. I have friends and family looking for dated pictures as well, though I've always been camera-shy so don't have much hope there. My mom actually paid for me to join the Y for part of the time, but I'm not sure if I kept any record of it or if it was in the last 5 years or further back. Either way I'm try to see if they still have records-- I think they still had me on file from childhood, so they probably do. Thanks again!

I hate to be "Debbie Downer" but I've run into the same roadblock with my insurance.  BCBSNC requires a 5-year weight history.  We have every year from 2002 to 2008 except for 2004-2005.  My surgeon's office says that will be a real problem.  I told her there's no way I was obese in 2003 and 2006 and perfectly normal and skinny in 2004-2005.  I'm sure I saw a physician during that period, but for the life of me I cannot remember who.  I requested records from every one I could think of, still missing 2 years.  And they also told me that Weigh****chers won't count.  I postponed my initial consult indefinitely . . .

Have you spoke to your PCP about the documentation for the past 4-5 years??  My surgeon gave me a sample letter(for the insurance company to read)  for my dr to follow.  I wrote up a history of my weight loss attempt for the past 5 years and my PCP took my history list, and the sample letter and combined them both.  I was only on a supervised diet once in my life. I had tried weigh****chers and did low fat/low carb diets at times and the gym..    Most insurance companies feel the surgery has to be medically nessarary for them to approve it.  I was a nervous wreck about this letter going to the insurance company. but they approved me.  Talk to your surgeon and PCP about this. if your PCP gave you a referal for the surgery, then they will work with you on the history.   Good Luck!
