I have federal blue cross blue shield and I heard a rumor (don't know if it is true that is why I am posting).  If you have gastric bypass and say 5 years down the road you have an intestinal infection or problem that if it can be linked to the weight loss surgery then insurance will not pay.  Has anyone ever heard this?  If you know of a situation like this please share.

I would say that is a load of garbage. Fed BCBS covers bariatric surgeyr, so why wouldn't it pay for complications?  They cannot agree to pay for a surgery and then deny to pay for any complications that come up! Bonnie

Bonnie I agree with you.   I worked for FEP BCBS for 15 years and I checked with my friends that are still servicing the FEP program and if they cover WLS they pay for complications, however down the road if the Office of Personnel Management changes the coverage in the future that could come into play not covering it.   But my sources tells me the likelihood of this happening is virtually unlikely. Ok I was scared there for a minute. But what the other ladies have said makes sense. I would also think a medical problem is a medical problem regardless if it had to do with WLS or not.  Good Luck!
