Medicare and Lapbands
My husband is 67, on Medicare and TriCare For Life and is considering LapBand surgery. Does anyone know if Medicare covers this for his age group? ( I had Lapband surgery in Oct 07, but I only have Tricare and they wouldn't pay so I went to Mexico. ) His BMI is 48 and he has Type II diabetes, and is taking meds for cholesterol. We are pretty sure he has sleep apnea, but he wouldn't go in for the sleep test his DR recommended. Thanks.
Medicare does cover the LapBand. They do require that the facility you go to for surgery is a COE hospital (Center of Excellence). Based on his age, it would be up to the surgeon on his cut off. Some surgeons do have a cut off at 60-65.
I've lost over 400 pounds!
I love helping others, if you have a question just ask!

Medicare pays for WLS for their beneficiaries regardless of age. Perhaps your surgeon's office was misinformed. Give Medicare a call for clarification. The lines are open 24/7.
