I just have a quick question. My insurance will be changing due to a change in my husband's job. I am just wondering how long is the appropriate time to wait after starting a new job and the new insurance starts up to begin looking into WLS approval?  Thank you for any help you can offer.

I guess it depends on the policy about pre-existing conditions and waiting periods. Some companies want you to wait an year for pre-existing conditions. I would try alternative weight management during the waiting period and after a year proceed with weight loss surgery.

Waiting periods should not apply as long as you had prior continuous coverage. I don't think it's "rude" to use your insurance right away.  ;)

I've always been under the impression that if you've maintained your coverage, no matter the carrier, with no lapses that the pre-existing / waiting periods did not apply.  I say go for it!

If there is no more than a 60 day lapse between coverages there is no pre existing.   If no lapse in coverage and have continous coverage pre-existing does not apply.    You just need to check you new carrier to see that there is no exclusions for WLS

There will not be a lapse. I know that I have to find out about exclusion for WLS, that is what I did with the current carrier, what I'm asking is at what point should I start asking the questions. Wasn't sure if it was rude to come in asking what I have to do to qualify for WLS when it's a brand new job for DH. In other words should I give it a few months? Thanks for all the input.

Thank you Vicki . He begins his new job in a couple of weeks. Next week is his last day at his current company. I was devastated when I called to find out if it was covered under our current Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee policy. They had a "no obesity related procedures" exclusion. I was hurt, but I see this new company as a new opportunity. So as soon as the insurance kicks in I'll give the insurance company a call and hopefully won't hear flat out that it's an exclusion.

Thank you for the response, unfortunately I think I am being misunderstood or maybe I worded things wrong. Here is the scenario: Hubby's current employer carries blue cross blue shield of tennessee. His company went with a obesity related procedure exclusion to save money. Have been told over and over again since April when I started asking that WLS was excluded. Fast forward, hubby starts a new job 1/28 that will bring with it new insurance.  Dilemna: I am just not sure if I should give him a little while to get settled in the job before I begin inquiring about WLS coverage.
