I was just wondering if anyone has had the surgery approved well on cobra? I'm thinking about changing jobs and im going to take cobra for about 6 months so i can still get wls, im just worried that even though it's supposed to be the same coverage that they may try to make it harder to get aprvd right now im working for the insurance company and the only requirement for the surgery is your bmi. I work with a few people that have had it and its very easy to get approved with the policy we have... From what I know medical management doesn't actually look at your benefits when they aprove you just the medical policies, which is why you always get a letter saying its been approved but is still subject to your benefits, also they cant take the coverage off for cobra can they?

Star, I wish I could say that they followed the rule of "they are not to treat you any different then any other policy holder" but I know it's not always so. In general, I'd like to think they do. But you are in a great situation. The requirements are so easy to meet, they would have to have a really good reason to DENY you. And if it's not in the policy, you can SUE them. You could also claim that they denied you b/c they had sour grapes for you quiting, or had something against you personally. They'd be too worried about a law suit, I think they'd approve you even if they KNEW you were Cobra. With other plans, they have policies that give ample reasons to deny someone. But if you meet the BMI criteria, and that's all you have to do to get approved, then you could take it as "personal" and sue their asses. Either way, they'll pay, even if after an appeal or legal action. I think you'll be fine, but that's just my opinion. Good luck, Kahlua
